LEONARD COHEN - CROATIA, PULA - August 2013 His concert in Pula in the magical ambient of Roman Arena was sold out few days earlier - until the very last moment you could see people wandering around asking for a ticket to buy. There was no Intro song that would slowly take us into the evening – when you hear “Dance Me to the End of Love” you know it’s the real deal right from the start. We saw his legendary kneeling on the stage and in a front of his musicians several times during the night. You actually can’t believe how active and mobile Cohen is at his age. Sometimes a lot younger performers are far less fit than he is. Cohen’s impeccable velvety baritone is still most beautiful. His voice got the full strength on the third song “Bird on the Wire”, after which everything sounded as of a pure gold. But not just his. Cohen has got a brilliant balance in his backing singers, three exceptional ladies of angelic voices: Webb sisters and Cohen’s long-term collaborator, Sharon Robinson. Sharon performed on her own “Alexandra Leaving” with such a sensitive feeling she received ovations from the excited audience even before the song was over. Charley and Hattie Webb shined too. Cohen started off “If It Be Your Will” reciting the first strophe, the sisters picked up from there totally on their own, playing only the guitar and the harp, singing amazingly. The concert was divided into the two sets with a short break of 15 minutes in between. If the first par was “introductory getting each other to know better”, the rest was pure joy and satisfaction. For everyone included. Cohen is also a fun performer. He even made jokes on his behalf during “Tower of Song” when he played the simple keyboards solo using only two fingers, receiving a big hand from the audience, asking it, “Are you making fun of my playing abilities?” Cohen added a few songs of his current album “Old Ideas” to his usual set-list, leaving out per example “In My Secret Life”, but no one complained. On “I’m your Man” the audience on seating below the stage got up on its feet and didn’t sit down again, though the concert was far from over. Famed “Hallejujah” that everyone heard in so many versions from so many performers that the song seemed almost worn out Cohen managed to perform in a totally different, fresh way. The regular part of the concert was closed with great “Take This Walz”. “First We Take Manhattan (than we take Berlin)” was performed with almost the same vigorous rhythm and energy we know from Joe Cocker, lyrics being so unbelievably timely. The second encore finished with the appropriate song, “Closing Time” trying discreetly to tell us it is the end. But both, Cohen and the audience accepted it only as a good fun, otherwise we wouldn’t got the third encore. Again amusingly with an allusion, “I Tried to Leave You” put big smiles on everybody’s faces. For the real ending, Cohen picked up a true evergreen, golden oldie, “Save the Last Dance for Me” – if you were not dancing before it, you surely danced on that one. Unbelievably long 3-hours set (the break excluded!) – how many performers are doing that? Only the great ones…
