NELLY FURTADO - Slovenia, Ljubljana, 14.03.2013

Nelly Furtado visited this region for the first time - concert was in Ljubljana. Audience was in good mood ready to party. After a bit lukewarm beginning, at “Manos Al Aire” and “Powerless (Say What You Want)” the audience ‘woke up’. Nelly seemed thrilled with the reception. Those who had not expected anything in particular from this gig as me, were left pleasantly surprised with the result. Ascetic stage was cleverly accessorized with ‘fashion details’ and equipped with good light-show so it all ended up interesting. Nelly is quite small lady in reality but on stage she sure looks like a ‘voice dynamite’. Nelly singing whatever vocal range she can sing sounds like a walk in the park. So easy, so effortlessly. She also has excellent communication with the crowd and the band, she dances, moves left and right using every inch of that stage and doesn’t miss a note. Early on in the show within the first part of Nelly performed legendary tune ‘Like a Bird’ - the crowd sang the song with zealousness, left Nelly charmed by the reception. Nelly tried quite a few music styles and genres in her career, but was a surprise to hear almost all that live in a single concert - and it all sounded as a coherent blend that lifted the show. The sound was also excellent ad we heard few really tough rocking arranged songs.

Nelly came back on encore with no ordinary business singing ‘Miracles’ with a Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’ snippet and showed how this timeless Madonna’s mega hit would sound if it were sung by a Nelly’s calibre singer - phenomenal! The end was expected dynamite with Hall & Oats’ standard ‘Maneater’. We travelled to Ljubljana on dog weather - but it was well spent evening and an ‘light-hearted’ trip.

THE BAMBI MOLESTERS – Croatia Zagreb, 21.02.2013

The Bambi Molesters storm-surfed at Croatian club Vintage Industrial Bar last night. The surf-rock instrumental quarter is coming form Croatia but are acclaimed abroad as well (R.E.M. took them to one of their tours as the support band).

They haven’t been around for several months and it was quite clear the audience missed them. Even the cold winter night, light snowing and the fact that it was a working day didn’t stop the crowd from coming. It appears that The Bambi Molesters live! is something people are really eager to see. Because the club was packed. Coming few minutes before the gig I saw really a long queue of people waiting to get their tickers. Something I haven’t seen for a while.

They started off with “Thunderin Guitar’s Song” from the last, internationally critically acclaimed studio album “As The Dark Wave Swells” and continued surf-rocking for almost two hours, adding to the setlist more diverse ingredients as tex-mex and rockabilly. Dalibor (second guitar) was unusually often behind the microphone – it looks as they are no longer just an instrumental band.

When they got to the second part of the concert which was filled with their hit tunes, the atmosphere in the club was on the top. The Bambi Molesters have just released a new single ”Last Ride” as well as video for it, that was taken off their excellent live movie “A Night in Zagreb” (2011) which was released as a double CD/DVD. Last night’s gig came very close to that one and this means only one thing: it was a damn good gig.

I haven’t counted or checked the setlist afterwards but they played at least 25 songs within two hours of concert and two encores.

There is not much more to say than: The Bambis – it is time to release a new studio album. I still have the image of the reviews page from British Q magazine in a front of my eyes – a very good review of their latest album ”As The Dark Wave Swells” and the rating 4 of 5 from a picky British music critics.

You may like or not this rock genre but the simple fact remains: The Bambi Molesters are great band with fine driving tunes that are stepping out of every regional boundaries. They are world class within their own genre.

I bet if you ask majority of average music consumers to tell you who are Dinosaur Jr. they wouldn’t have a clue. At the other hand whoever is familiar with more engaging rock music alternative or other, they would tell you Dinosaur Jr. is a band to listen to.

Three Massachusetts’ musketeers appeared in a front of a massive wall of amplifiers that looked a bit ridiculous for a small venue. It was quite clear from the beginning that sound roar will come tumbling down onto the audience. And it did. The trio that influenced a lot of bands of alternative rock of 90-ies were doing a sort of sound and rhythm “knitting” – interchanging songs of cooler and “driving” guitar solos with the others of a massive loudness, distorted guitar riffs – it fitted easily into cold-hot-cold-hot schematics and it was just fabulous.

Promoting new acclaimed and really good album “I Bet on Sky” they played several songs that I felt were accepted by the audience almost as good as the old ones.

J Macis – in the best shape of the LOTR ‘s vicious white wizzard Saruman has done exactly the same as popular movie character – viciously played the guitar with seemingly not engaging, lazy and to an extend almost non-comprehensive singing.

On moments Dinosaur Jr. sounded like a rock trio with the music you can listen while on your afternoon errands, but the next as all the hell broke loose. I felt a bit disappointed with relatively bad sound – you couldn’t tell what Macis was singing about; distorted sound was way too loud not to walk home without buzzing in your ears for the entire night.
But even that didn’t matter. Dinosaur Jr. are in damn good shape. In a completely careless state of mind they did what old Romans used to: “VENI, VIDI, VICI” (come, see, win).

SLASH ft. MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS, LJUBLJANA SLOVENIA 8-2-2013

Oh well, I am truly impressed. Last night Slash, the best rock guitarist alive showed that this is true statement in sold out Tivoli in Ljubljana.

With a little help from his friends Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. Slash is not only great guitarist but an author as well because otherwise he wouldn’t have at least one other excellent band after legendary Guns’n’Roses - Velvet Revolver was awesome and we heard their “Slither” last night too. I also love his two solo albums “Slash” and recent “Apocalyptic Love” though I miss his own voice touch on them - he doesn’t sing so he had guest vocalists on both. The last one, Myles Kennedy proved to be as strong and powerful singer as Axl ever was. He may have a bit irritating pitch sometimes, but not last night, last night topped it all. Myles is also very communicative and dynamic on stage as everyone else from The Conspirators.

Btw. Todd Kerns on bass is also a great vocal (singing “Welcome to the Jungle”). And Slash? Well…we all listen and read how he is one of the best and so on, or we listen past regrets on lost times with Gunses.

If everyone doubted if he’s THE best rock guitarist at the moment such doubt exists no more… he is simply like from another planet. It’s not that he has only technical precision of a razor blade (lots of others have that too) - he has something else that is rare: every note has its own story, emotion, „it“. Slash plays the guitar outside any general idea of comparison. And has yet another quality that’s rare: he doesn’t get on and on with his solos and gets boring. I almost stopped breathing on „Rocket Queen“and „my“ „Anastasia“. Over two hours long concert pumped with energy both ways back and forth. Awesome. Slash doesn’t talk much, but when he does you can see that he really enjoys himself in what he does.

Such gig will be VERY tough to overcome this year. Who will be the one to do that? Springsteen? Bon Jovi? Clapton? We’ll see….
